Overwritten data
Overwriting your data occurs when you have deleted files, reformatted your hard drive, deleted a partition or imaged over your hard drive and then create new files or save data back to your hard drive. The "erased data" starts to have new data written on top of the old data.
Severe platter damage
Platter damage is caused when the read/write heads crash or hit the platters. Your data is stored on the platters and if they get scarred or scratched your data can become unrecoverable. If you hear clicking, grinding or other unusual sounds, turn off your computer.
Shifted data and data corruption
Data shifting occurs when the bytes of information stored on your hard drive moves (shifts) to different sectors. Shifting can be caused by power surges, switching PCB boards or if the head assembly or spindle motor becomes mis-aligned.
Protect your data and yourself from total loss. DO NOT attempt to run data recovery software or other utilities when you hear clicking or other unusual sounds.
